The evening is approaching and you are getting hungry. You and your partner might face the dilemma: "Who should cook and who should clean the dishes". On certain evenings, you might have to do both. Sure, the best answer to solve half of the problem would be this. In my case, I am usually the one ending up cleaning the dishes. However, even if you own a dishwasher, there is always special kitchenware you want to wash by hand.
The sponge may be our best ally against the dirt, but it could also be our worst enemy. Even a new sponge ends up smelling funky quickly. Many people don’t know that a dirty sponge may contain more bacteria than a toilet. And who would like to wash the dishes in the toilet?
So which options do we have:
- Clean your sponge! "Yes clean, but how?" you may ask. One of the most effective method is supposed to be the microwave: put a wet sponge in the microwave for 2 minutes on high. All the bacteria will be killed (or, at least, well cooked). According to Michigan State University, you can also soak the sponge in concentrated bleach, however microwaving just seems easier.
- Change your sponge! Some studies suggest that not even the microwave could kill perfectly all the bacteria from your sponge. When did you change your sponge last time? If you don't remember, then it's surely time for a new one!
